Berkdrums Another amazing, breathtakingly beautiful release! Drifting on these clouds of everlasting peaceful sounds.. ‘Less is more’ doesn’t mean it sounds as if the artist doesn’t do that much to create, and sculp these amazing tracks, I mean it in the sense that I’m so thankful these tracks are not overloaded with all kinds of soundeffects and busy melody-lines that get me out of focus. This here is another little masterpiece..

about

"The ego desiring perfection is part
and parcel of imperfection." ~ Jean Klein

"True perfection seems imperfect,
yet it is perfectly itself." ~ Lao Tzu

"To be in harmony with the wholeness
of things is not to have anxiety over
imperfections." ~ Dōgen Zenji

"Nothing we see or hear is perfect.
But right there in the imperfection
is perfect reality." ~ Shunryu Suzuki

In 2017 I sent these tracks for mastering to Ben Cox, who discovered audio imperfections that, because my hearing is waning, I hadn’t detected. It seemed the tracks weren’t worth salvaging, yet I stubbornly persisted, trying to find a home for them and they sat in one label’s approval queue over a year before I finally decided: I would re-mix them with nature sounds to mask the flaws! This ploy proved an artistic mistake because the crickets, birds, and wind, besides being ambient music pastiche, quickly become overbearing.

So, rather than hiding the flaws, I’m telegraphing them. I offer you these tracks in the spirit of the Japanese aesthetic wabi-sabi which finds beauty in cracks, chips, worn-out, and obviously-mended things because flaws are the true nature of reality. All that exists is perfectly imperfect and imperfectly perfect.

Perhaps as recording artists (and perhaps more so as labels), we strive too much for audio perfection and fidelity, thinking that our artistic sensibilities somehow create something perfect for an otherwise imperfect world.

Or perhaps we get too attached to our own ideas of perfection or expectations of perfection from artists.

And maybe sometimes, we strive for a perfect creation to pridefully mask what we perceive are our own personal flaws.

As a diamond is no less valuable for its unique flaws, so each of us is no less valuable for ours. Each of us is a walking, breathing metaphor of perfection and imperfection and that is our true nature.

Each of us contains the entire universe; just so, each of us are unique metaphors for everything.
