Absolute Fields

Phillip Wilkerson

running time: 54:37

“In the years that I've been listening to and deeply enjoying Phillip Wilkerson's music, there has been one constant: that in his music, Phillip Wilkerson is showing you the innermost workings of his soul. Engaging warmth, intense emotion, and an almost aching sense of beauty infuses everything. It is as personal as it is powerful. His latest release, ‘Absolute Fields,’ again offers us an escape into an intimate space of softly washed ambient landscapes, painted in the most honest tonal colors in Wilkerson's palette. Let this drifting release loop endlessly; floating freely in Wilkerson's lush expressions, you may just discover pieces of own soul.”

— John Shanahan, Hypnagogue Podcast

“Phillip originally contacted me in August with a batch of tracks to master. I listened to them countless times on headphones while working on other things, and eventually decided they really should be on Stereoscenic! They created a very powerful "spaced out" feeling... distant and tranquil. Over the many listens, I gradually selected half of the tracks and settled on an order that seems to tell a story—getting deeper out there from tracks 1 to 5. The title track actually came from a second batch, because something felt missing. There's a great fragile & lo-fi feeling in that track that was just perfect before coming home with the solid low drone of the closing track.

The three abstract artworks featured on the packaging were made by Phillip some time ago and were just sitting in an archive waiting for this release. We combed through quite a few to select images that conveyed something of the title and feel of the music.

It has always been a pleasure working with Phillip and I’m proud to finally present this album—possibly my favorite of his so far...”

Sojourner

Phillip Wilkerson

"…a time-stretching suite of six classic ambient pieces that, in coursing along as slowly as they do, allow us as listeners to slow down as well…a beautiful release, another must-hear from Mr. Wilkerson…

John Shanahan ~ Hypnagogue Music Reviews

~

Sylvain Lupari ~ Synth&Sequences

~

"...a smooth and buoyant float amidst long sweeping drones reminiscent of drifting on large ocean waves, as the music ebb and flows in a brilliant tension and release..."

StillStream ~ Featured Release 9/2013

Liner Notes:

I composed Sojourner with the focused intention of specifically offering listeners a collection of imaginative and meditative quests that, hopefully, will take you to the deep listening and being zone within your listening space. And with every subsequent listen, perhaps even achieving a different experience by allowing the musical odyssey itself to be your destination.

Additionally, Sojourner explores new levels of emotional intensity and tension without dipping into Dark Ambient. So while the music offered here explores a richer emotional intensity, I hope it also still conveys the positive spiritual undercurrents and musical signature associated with my previous Light Ambient efforts.

Finally, I added the self-directive: "Go as slow as you can go." My intention with the patient blooming of these tracks is to explore the musical character, nuance, expression, and emotion that unfolds by holding the music to a slower pace--such as a breathing pace or the pace of waves washing onto a seashore. Sojourner is about ambient music that is focused, emotionally warm, and visceral, yet evenly paced for highly concentrated and deeply contemplative aural journeys.

Highlands

Phillip Wilkerson

“…classic relaxation music, carved out of far-reaching, soft synth pads, cloud-like and warm…Wilkerson is in full control of his craft, and Highlands is one of his best drift-based works to date…”
John Shanahan ~ Hypnagogue Music Reviews

“…the most impressive…is the 21-minute opening piece “Sweet Eva Lena”, an emotionally charged work of art with a beautiful sense of longing and romance running underneath…”
Bert Strolenberg ~ Sonic Immersion

“…the listener is completely immersed in a golden glow of warm ambient pads…with elongated higher and lower pads meshing into lush, spacious, slowly changing textures. It really doesn’t get much more chilled than this. Contemplative music to relax to, to imagine, to reminisce, to daydream.”
Baxter Tocher ~ EarTickles

“Wilkerson…records in a variety of styles, but this masterwork of four tracks on the new Free Floating label is pure waves of padded bliss, celestial, comforting, calming. Possibly his best release yet…”
Make Your Own Taste ~ 10 Netlabel Ambient Albums You Should Own

“…these four pieces create a space of subtle yet immense stillness, a place to find repose or to explore the depths of our truest selves…”
Brad Ross-MacLeod ~ Free Floating
